Predicting the 87th Academy Awards

The 85th Academy Awards® will air live on Oscar® Sunday, February 24, 2013.

And the Oscar goes to…

Tomorrow night, the much awaited announcement of winners for the 87th Academy Awards will happen. Of course aside from the fashion statement, crazy happenings within the cerenomy.. what the people would really like to know is who will win a trophy.

Predicting the Oscars gives me so much joy to be honest because for one, I can’t help but be extremely bias with my choices and two, I just want to prove sometimes that my gut or points were correct. Haha.

This year’s Oscars, I’m happy that I was able to see all of the nominees in the major awards that I will be predicting in the next few notes. So I must say, some of my favorites that I am rooting for, I am still praying for miracles and just imagine how I felt bad during the announcement of nominess and the unexpected ones got the nod and some expected one were snubbed.

Now, here are my prediction for some of the major awards. I tried to be reasonable, took a track on the other awards show and of course my personal choices.

This will be tough but since prior to Oscars, the competition is just between Birdman and Boyhood. Not that the other nominees are bad but with every single award giving bodies (SAG, BAFTA, Gloden Globes, et. al), it is either Boyhood or Birdman who wins this category. But then who knows, the Academy might get fancy and give it to American Sniper who has enjoyed a box office success and critic’s nods during its recent run and the voters might consider it since the hype around it is still fresh. Also, one that could be a threat is Selma which drew a hype after series of snubs for the acting categories and a director slot. The Academy might give it to the film for less guilt? Haha. Either way, I am still firm to the fact that it is between the first two films I ranked (based on how I think they will fair in their category).

MY CHOICE: Whiplash

With the Lego Movie got snubbed for a nomination (Like Whaaaat?) it will be an easy win for How To Train Your Dragon 2. Unless, the Academy goes all fancy again and give it to a surprising box office and critically acclaimed film, Big Hero 6, which I prefer. Nonetheless, I will be really shocked if How To Train Your Dragon 2 will not win this one.

WHO WILL WIN: How To Train Your Dragon 2
MY CHOICE: Song Of The Sea

Well the Academy would probably give this to Common & John Legend’s Glory for the film “Selma” which I think the film’s best bet for an Oscar. Nothing really here screams a win prior the Oscars especially when “Glory” won in the Golden Globes.

WHO SHOULD WIN: Lost Stars (Begin Again)
WHO WILL WIN: Glory (Selma)
MY CHOICE: Lost Stars (Begin Again)

Usually when the Academy gives a film the best picture award, the best director award is handed on a different person (and the vice versa) but I am seeing the 12 years work of Richard Linklater would give him the trophy.

WHO SHOULD WIN: Alejandro G Inarritu (Birdman)
WHO WILL WIN: Richard Linklater (Boyhood)
MY CHOICE: Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game)

To be honest, there’s no stopping Patricia Arquette from winning this category. She’s been getting all these trophies prior to Oscars so I wouldn’t even be surprised if she wins an Oscar. If there is someone who can come close to snagging that win from her, it might be Emma Stone of Birdman.

WHO SHOULD WIN: Patricia Arquette (Boyhood)
WHO WILL WIN: Patricia Arquette (Boyhood)
MY CHOICE: Emma Stone (Birdman)

– I wanted personally for Edward Norton of Birdman to win this category but let’s be real, JK Simmons of Whiplash is simply incredible. And there’s no stopping him as he just won every single trophy from different organizations in the weeks leading to the Oscars. So the only thing that will happen is that I will be really stunned if the Academy won’t give it to him tomorrow.

WHO SHOULD WIN: JK Simmons (Whiplash)
WHO WILL WIN: JK Simmons (Whiplash)
MY CHOICE: Edward Norton (Birdman)

These women actually gave stunning performances and even if Jennifer Aniston was shut out of the nomination, she also deserves a spot here. More so, this is easily a win for Julianne Moore. She has been winning the award over the same nominees in the other organizations such as the SAG, the Globes, BAFTA and even the Critic’s Choice. The closest one to pull an upset, which is unlikely, is Felicity Jones.

WHO SHOULD WIN: Julianne Moore (Still Alice)
WHO WILL WIN: Julianne Moore (Still Alice)
MY CHOICE: Felicity Jones (Theory Of Everything)

This will be interesting because prior to Oscars both Eddie Redmayne (Theory Of Everything) and Michael Keaton (Birdman) are winning trophies from different organizations. So it will boil down to who the Academy likes the most. But if American Sniper star, Bradley Cooper could pull an upset due to the fact that the film had so much hype, box office hit and was critically acclaimed, that will be another story. But I’m skeptic about the possibility. Nonetheless, I am very much interested to found who will get the win since this is a stacked category. Remember, rightful actors were snubbed as well since the category is stacked with great nominees. David Oyelowo (Selma), Jake Gylenhaal (Nightcrawler) were among those who got snubbed for this category.

WHO SHOULD WIN: Eddie Redmayne (Theory Of Everything)
WHO WILL WIN: Michael Keaton (Birdman)
MY CHOICE: Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game)

*Tomorrow we will all find out if my predictions are correct or if my favorites will snag an upset. Check out my blog for tomorrow’s result! xoxo
