Movie Review: Insurgent (’15 Robert Schwentke)

It’s a star-studded cast. You have Kate Winslet, Naomi Watts, Daniel Dae-Kim, Octavia Spencer who establishes great support to its future, young talented cast headlines by Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort, Theo James and Miles Teller. It’s like a perfect recipe for a movie adaptation and installment of a popular book series. But here’s the thing. Regardless of how fantastic Shailene Woodley is here, the film fell short from its potential. I prefer the first one (“Divergent”) more than this. It lacks that ooomph and depth that I thought they would work on from the first one. The narrative is a little underwhelming. The transition is a little messy. The whole thing was just a miss for me. Of course, I still love the action packed sequences and there’s no denying that these young casts were really charismatic on screen but the flaws of the film is what kept it more crossing the mediocre part to a fantastic line. Sigh. But I think, there are still moments here that shines but it was really lackluster. 6
