American Idol XIV: Top 6

Wow. This was all sorts of awkward moments and I don’t want to go on details about what just happened.

The contestants performed twice tonight, tackling some “American Classics”. Also, another idol is eliminated tonight.

ELIMINATED:

JOEY COOK

MY FUNNY VALENTINE
– At first I thought this will work perfectly but somehow, the tone in Joey’s voice and the quirk and how she delivered put me like in a death spot. It sounded very unusual and tentative. The vocals here were also messy. 4.5

SOMEBODY TO LOVE
– This is very pleasant. the arrangement worked perfectly with Joey. It is like in her wheelhouse and the vocals sounded fine. I wish though, there are stronger moments here but I love the vibe of it. 7

– –

12. BEAT IT
Jax

– This was frantic and too much of an energetic performance. Her pitch is nowhere to be found and the overall performance is just a mess for my taste. 5

11. LONG TRAIN RUNNIN
Rayvon Owen

– Cheesy. Vocally it was fine but it was a decent karaoke version with so much cheese and corny-ness. 5

10. WHY DO FOOLS FALL IN LOVE
Tyanna Jones

– The track is pitch under her and there is something about her delivery that is tentative and unsure. Her nerves seem to get the best of her. 6

9. ARE YOU GONNA GO MY WAY
Quentin Alexander

– This was decent but the lack of vocal support and his pitch uneven in his delivery marked a decent to a vocal flawed performance. 6.5

8. PIECE OF MY HEART
Jax

– Her intonation sounded weird. Her enunciation is a little messy. Her phrasing is a bit problematic. I didn’t like this that much. Even her vocals didn’t have that enough support and power to pull this totally well. 7

7. PROUD MARY
Tyanna Jones

– I like the energy here but it served a decent purpose. It was almost karaoke but her youthful delivery and great stage presence made it more compelling than I expected. 7

6. MOON RIVER
Clark Beckham

– This is not perfect. In fact, there are parts where his pitch messed up. But Clark was able to convey strength in subtlety and power in his restraint. This was lovely albeit missing some dynamics. 7.5

5. CLARK BECKHAM
Superstition

– The beginning showed promise. His vocals were strong. I hated the song choice but to be fair, Clark delivered a pretty outstanding and not karaoke version of this track! Pretty good. 8

4. THE SOUND OF SILENCE
Quentin Alexander

– Lovely! While I hate another dark, moody and melancholic version, I thought it perfectly worked in this version! The dynamics was fine. His phrasing was lovely. This is pretty good! 8

3. AMERICAN GIRL
Nick Fradiani

– There is confidence in his delivery that I thought worked really well. While he never really do anything artistic about the song, he manage to pull a solid vocal performance with enough charm, comfort and appeal. This is impressive from Nick! 8

2. ALWAYS ON MY MIND
Rayvon Owen

– The way he caressed those notes and verses were lovely. His tone is like butter and his delivery is simply smooth and gorgeous. This was yet another strong performance from Rayvon which totally saved his butt once again. 8

1. ONLY THE GOOD DIE YOUNG
Nick Fradiani

– This worked perfectly. And I don’t know what Harry was ranting about, but I thought this is Nick at his best to date. The arrangement was brilliant. His delivery is lovely. His tone was beautiful. His vocals were front and center. Wow, this is his best performance yet. 8.5
