On TV: Jennifer Lopez On Carpool Karaoke

Jennifer Lopez is the latest artist to join James Corden popular segment, Carpool Karaoke, on his late night show. The Shades of Blue lead actress and Idol judge bust out some of her hits with James and in a funny twist, sent a text message to a recent Oscar winner! It was a fun little bit and James Corden is proving to be one funny man and this segment is just really growing on me. Also, I didn’t realize not until now how much of Jennifer’s songs that I actually like. Yay! She’s really a triple threat, by the way. Sorry Mimi!

Here’s Jennifer and James’ Carpool Karaoke:

The Voice US 10: Knockouts (2)

The Voice US Season 10
Knockouts part 2 is on its way and we all know that last night, 3 STEALS were already used so it is impossible for an hour show to have a steal moment. This felt like a fodder episode. Lol.

Anyway, Miley Cyrus is actully not bad as a mentor as what I picture her to be, so I am actually excited to see the dynamics she will bring next season together with Alicia Keys.

Now on to the night.

ADAM WAKEFIELD
Bring It On Home To Me
Team BLAKE
WINNER (vs. Peyton Parker)

– Adam reminds me of Cole Vosbury before and I wouldn’t be surprise if Blake goes on a smart, risky move of making Adam sing something R&B to surprise everyone and skyrocket Adam to the final 12. His take on this Sam Cooke tune is solid with right grit and consistent vocal points. 7

PEYTON PARKER
Travelin’ Soldier
Team BLAKE
ELIMINATED (vs. Adam Wakefield)

– Yikes. She wasn’t that much connected with her material. More so, some of her notes were off pitch. 5

MOUSHUMI
New Americana
Team PHARRELL
WINNER (vs. Nick Hagelin)

– Moushumi keeps giving me this interest on her and the song choice was something current and probably a good one for her. It shows some of her lovely tone – a bit under pitch – but I’m impressed. 7

NICK HAGELIN
Lost Without U
Team PHARRELL
ELIMINATE (vs. Moushumi)

– The work on his falsettos is a bit messy as it goes off key some time. I wish he didn’t use the guitar because I felt it was just useless. The vocals weren’t consistent but there are parts where Nick sounded beautiful. Not topping the duet of Adam-Chris during the S7 Finale nor Robin Thicke’s original but this is decent. 6.5

MAYA SMITH
No One
Team CHRISTINA
ELIMINATED (vs. Tamar Davis)

– While this was solid in parts, it felt quite limited for Maya. Her vocals were fine but the overall impact of the song is quite forgettable. 7

TAMAR DAVIS
Lay Me Down
Team CHRISTINA
WINNER (vs. Maya Smith)

– Solid but I need more tender moments from her. Something that just doesn’t speak “diva”. Probably a more risky choices on her melody and liberties? We will see. 7.5

The Voice US 10: Knockouts (1)

The Voice US Season 10

It’s the start of the Knockouts Round! You see, I still think that the US version should get the format of Knockouts Round in the US version or mixed it up with the 6-Chair Challenge style of X Factor so that there would still be a “Save” option.

Anyway, it was a solid showing from the artists and even if I think the bias in this format is evident when coaches pair their preferred artist against some cannon fodders. Haha.

So here it goes, the 12 Knockouts performances of the night.

ANGIE KEILHAUER
Take Your Time
Team BLAKE
ELIMINATED (vs. Paxton Ingram)

– Yikes! I wonder what happened because on paper, this should be a home run for her but somehow, in this performance, it just didn’t work. Her pitch sounded ridiculous. Her phrasing is terrible. It was just super off. 3

PAXTON INGRAM
Hometown Glory
Team BLAKE
WINNER (vs. Angie Keilhauer)

– There are parts that were flat but I thought Paxton held his own with this song. It was tough but he managed to pull a decent one. 6

OWEN DANOFF
She’s Always A Woman
Team ADAM
WINNER (vs. Ryan Quinn)

– The clarity in his voice is soothing. The performance is really lovely and how he managed to keep it faithful to the original yet sounded current is beyond me. His emotional connection with the song is also there. One thing though – he needs to find a way to make his performances more interesting or it will soon feel lazy and sleepy. 7.5

RYAN QUINN
Drops Of Jupiter
Team ADAM
ELIMINATED (vs. Owen Danoff); STOLEN (Team Christina)

– Gorgeous face, gorgeous vocals. Ryan can sing and his precise take on the song is just compelling. Sure, he is not that connected with his material and his stage work needed more work, Ryan is still a dangerous catch and with him joining Christina’s team, we could really see a female coach finally winning this show. 7

HANNAH HUSTON
House Of The Rising Sun
Team PHARRELL
WINNER (vs. Malik Heard)

– Let’s not dwell on those weird hand gestures. But boy, Hannah slayed this song really good! Her pitch was spot on. Her dynamics were interesting. Her phrasing is gorgeous. Though, I’m tired with the song choice, I thought it did served well for Hannah! 8

MALIK HEARD
Isn’t She Lovely?
Team PHARRELL
ELIMINATED (vs. Hannah Huston)

– Sweet, smooth tone but the pitch is inconsistent and though I like Malik, I thought this was just a throwaway performance. 6.5

KATIE BASDEN
Gypsy
Team BLAKE
WINNER (vs. Lacy Mandigo)

– I’ll be honest, I am not familiar at all with this song choice but somehow Katie sold it to me. I never really consider Katie not until she impressed me with her recent performances. Her vocals were stunning. Her take is just pure, gorgeous and sublime. A bit dragging towards the end but I digress! 8

LACY MANDIGO
Zombie
Team BLAKE
ELIMINATED (vs. Katie Basden); STOLEN (Team Pharrell)

– Lacy sang a decent cover of the song but her pitch was inconsistent and her tone sounded wobbly in parts. But then, i thought it was good. Not great but needed more refining! 6.5

ALISAN PORTER
River
Team CHRISTINA
WINNER (vs. Daniel Passino)

– Look, there is no denying that Alisan is just a vocal beast but in her recent performances – including this – I found some of her vocal choices to be more of showboating. I feel like some are unnecessary vocal high that seems now more like a vocal scream. She needs to find subtlety. Sure, this is more subdued in parts but I wanted that girl from the Blind Auditions to wow me again. 7

DANIEL PASSINO
Ain’t Too Proud To Beg
Team CHRISTINA
ELIMINATED (vs. Alisan Porter)

– Decent but nothing really special. Daniel is a good vocalist, unfortunately for him, his performance tonight is above good karaoke and he was paired with Alisan Porter which made him a cannon fodder. 6

EMILY KEENER
Big Yellow Taxi
Team PHARRELL
WINNER (vs. Shalyah Fearing)

– While I thought she had some tempo problems within the performance, there is something naturally adorable with her performance that I thought worked on here. Her tone sounded nice than ever and she was consistently on pitch which was a huge improvement to her prior performances. 7

SHALYAH FEARING
A Broken Wing
Team PHARRELL
ELIMINATED (vs. Emily Keener); STOLEN (Team Adam)

– It was a tough song choice but I thought Shalyah held her own and pull this one real strong. Her vocal control is impeccable. Her pitch is mostly spot on. And her high register is solid at its best! I think Adam had another “Amanda Brown” gem here! Key: Right song choice Adam! 7.5

The Voice UK 5: Quarter-Finals

3 Weeks of Live Shows. 2 already quits the show before it even started. 1 underwhelming night.

This is probably one of the least favorite round of this franchise. I mean, we spent weeks of Blinds then set the tone on some great battles and the format of the knockouts is probably something the other franchise should follow but the worst live show format is attributed to the The Voice UK.

See how in 3 weeks we will already crown a new The Voice UK champ? Yikes. Okay. So tonight is the same old, same thing. All artists will perform. Each coach will save an artist for an instant pass to next week’s Semi-Finals. Then the public will vote like literally in minutes of who they wanted to move on to the next round. So basically in the finals, all coaches are well represented with one artist left. Ugh.

Stevie McCrorie returns with his new single. Years & Years also performs tonight.

Now here’s how I rank tonight’s performances.

10. LAUREN LAPSLEY – BROWNE
Dreamer
Team WILL

– What a mess. The song choice was just wrong. The styling is screaming show girl. The performance – for me – was jusf all over the place. Look, Lauren tried her best but with her pitch that was just off, her high registers were flat and the vocals mostly sharp? I just didn’t think this even worked at all. 3

9. HARRY FISHER
Space Oddity
Team BOY GEORGE

– What are these song choices. I do love how The Voice UK usually introduces me to terrific songs that I haven’t heard before but if something like this wasted a talent like Harry, I am buffled. Harry can sing but the song itself didn’t allow him to show dynamics and marketability. It was almost dragging and his vocals? weakest to date. 4

8. CODY FROST
Ordinary World
Team BOY GEORGE

– I love me some Cody but this was one just odd or if not to be more precise, her performance felt like one of the same thing. I know she was trying to infuse her authenticty but I wish it was in the right idea and excution. Something that will surprise us. Here the vocals felt lazy, sleepy and the over all performance is one step closer to being bland. 4.5

7. LYRICKAL
Just Like A Child
Team WILL

– This is an idea that is on paper a great one but the execution was just almost but not quite. While I thought it is a good take, the inconsistencies with his vocals made it weak. 5

6. HEATHER CAMERON -HAYES
Stitches
Team PALOMA

– If only Heather stayed on that first hof arrangement, then this will be a homerun. I thought the first half if gorgeous but once the band kicked in with her, she kinda lose her tempo and her pitch became off. But nice effort. She needs to okay her cards well. 6

5. KEVIN SIMMS
Kissing You
Team RICKY

– His vocals is arguably one of the best this season but Kevin needs to know how to use his dynamics. The choices in his vocals could’ve been better and I wish he chose a different song that will allow us to hear him in that more intimate and quiet performance because we know he can belt. 6.5

4. JORDAN GRAY
Shake It Out
Team PALOMA

– The production of this is impressive. The choices he took in the vocals department were interesting. But the whole performance is too theatrical, it kinda lost the essence for me. 7

3. LYDIA LUCY
Somebody Else’s Guy
Team WILL

– Lydia’s performance showed that she is an able pop star. From the soaring vocals to the liberties she took in the verses, it was actually solid. She just had to be more careful because of some pitch issues here and there. 7

2. VANGELIS
Here’s Comes The Rain Again
Team BOY GEORGE

– Gorgeous! He allows to be more intimate to the song in this arrangement that I thought was a smart move. We only have limited live shows, so play with your strengths artists! Anyway, Vangelis sang this really well. Great job! 8

1. JOLAN
Yes
Team RICKY

– I am impressed with how consistent Jolan has been this season and I must say, this is just a solid showing from him. His vocals were spot on. The liberties he took were precise. I was entertained. 8

TOP 8
Kevin Simms (Ricky’s Fast Pass)
Jordan Gray (Paloma’s Fast Pass)
Cody Frost (Boy George’s Fast Pass)
Lyrickal (Will’s Fast Pass)
Jolan (Public’s Vote)
Heather Cameron – Hayes (Public’s Vote)
Vangelis (Public’s Vote)
Lydia Lucy (Public’s Vote)

ELIMINATED
Harry Fisher
Lauren Lapsely – Browne

On TV: Fifth Harmony Performs “Work From Home” at Jimmy Kimmel Live

Power girl group and X Factor US biggest stars dropped by Jimmy Kimmel Live to perform their latest and probably will be their biggest hit to date. Work from Home which is currently doing so well on radio and sales per se is Fifth Harmony’s first single from their forthcoming sophomore album! These girls are stars. Singing live, choreography and they even wear the same clothing they had on their music video.

Check out their performance below:

New Track: Nick Jonas (ft. Tove Lo) – Close

Tove Lo has been collaborating a lot recently no? The Talking Body hit maker had a collaboration with Coldplay, Years & Years and now pop singer, Nick Jonas. The younger Jonas brother is debuting his new music for the forthcoming new album of his. The title of the track is “Close”, which continues the edgy sound and falsetto-powered single from Nick! It’s sexy and edgy which I like and the single is pop radio friendly.

Check out the single and video below:

American Idol 15: Top 4

American Idol 15 Final 10

I am in denial! I can’t believe it will be just two weeks left and American Idol is over. Forever. Huhu.

And we’re down the stretch and the Top 4 were revealed. Two young heartthrobs, 1 consistent front runner diva and an emerging dark horse delivering his best night yet?

It was an interesting night from American Idol season 15 with Sia and Steven Van Zandt serving as the mentors for tonight. They were awesome and great as they were able to help and push these kids so well that most of them delivered quite well tonight. Oh also, it’s a bittersweet elimination for Sonika Vaid. She wasn’t even allowed to sing. Yikes!

Now on to the show.

ROUND 1: CLASSIC ROCK

4. MACKENZIE BOURG
I Want You To Want Me

– Yikes. Weak vocals, lazy performance. This just didn’t go anywhere at all and the bland performance just didn’t do anything on Mackenzie. I feel like he is being one trick wonder and his voice is too limited. 5

3. DALTON RAPATTONI
God Only Knows

– Oh Dalton. I thought it was a decent effort with enough emotions – though I wanted a more raw ones – in it. The texture of his voice was nice touch. The vocals were not perfect. This is okay. 6

2. LA’PORSHA RENAE
Wanted Dead Or Alive

– While I question the song choice, I never really question how well La’Porsha sang this. It was well done but then again, I have heard her do it like this. My point: I wish I will hear something more controlled and quiet from La’Porsha the next time. 7

1. TRENT HARMON
Sharp Dressed Man

– Smart, brilliant, stunning! Trent kept the integrity of the original in this performance with so much respect and at the same time infusing his style and take on it with so much gusto and passion. In the end, Trent just delivered one of the most astonishing performance of the season. 9

ROUND 2: SIA’S SONGBOOK

4. DALTON RAPATTONI
Bird Set Free

– I was about to get sold by this but then it was bordering to theatrics that I never really totally enjoy his performance. The vocals were not perfect but parts of it were interesting enough. 6

3. MACKENZIE BOURG
Titanium

– Yikes! His vocals were weak that somehow the backtrack drowns it naturally. There are parts that sounded decent but for most, I find the breathy quality quite odd. 6

2. LA’PORSHA RENAE
Elastic Heart

– On paper, I think the Sia Songbook will be a piece of cake for La’Porsha but I was left underwhelmed. Her performance sounded like I’ve heard from her before. It was good but I expected more or something exciting. 7.5

1. TRENT HARMON
Chandelier

– It was an exquisite vocal performance from Trent. From the liberties he took to the delicate, soft and controlled quality of delivery of the song that is just beautiful. He phrased the song wonderfully and the gorgeous nuanced vocal dynamics are just stunning! For whatever reason, Trent just showed two brilliant performances that were a contrast yet put him at the top of the pack! Great job! 9.5
