The Voice Australia 5: Top 12

The Voice Australia 5: Live Shows

We are in week 2 of our live shows and competition is turning out to be very interesting. The artists are really in it to win it and the top spot is in anybody’s hand. Oh, the coaches are pretty fun too with their chemistry – very impeccable. And I love how they just don’t sugarcoat. They will say what they want to say without being nitpicky. Great stuff!

Anyway, I’m glad that the public will now entirely decide on who will be safe.

On to the performances.

TEAM MADDEN

[3] LANE SINCLAIR
Life On Mars

– What was that? I’m sorry but even though I like Lane, this was just weak, cringe worthy for me. At some point I got scared with her rendition. Yikes. 4

[2] AALIYAH WARREN
Killing Me Softly

– Aaliyah needed more confidence to pull this in a cool, smooth manner. She had bright moments especially during the beginning but once she second guessed herself, she became timid and unsure that her vocals were also affected. 5

[1] ANDREW LOADSMAN
Hold Back The River

– I thought once again Andrew gave a solid performance albeit some verses were a little heavy in terms of how he sang them. But still I think it was a good one. 7

TEAM DELTA

[3] ADAM LADELL
Chasing Cars

– Adam had some good moments in here and I thought his tone sounded his best yet. His vocals turned shaky towards the end but I digress. 6

[2] ALFIE ARCURI
Lay Me Down

– While I thought Alfie once again delivered a solid performance, I also think that it was starting to be predictable. He did find some ways to do some liberties in terms of his vocal choices but it just didn’t do anything else for him. 7

[1] KIM SHEEHY
Wild Things

– Lovely! The tempo may have made her a bit frantic in terms of wording out the verses but her tone matched by the simple acoustic guitar arrangement of the song made her vocals front and center and I loved it! Also the song choice made it clear that Kim can do something current and structured. Great job Kim. 8

TEAM JESSIE

[3] ELLEN REED
Stone Cold

– Ellen once again performed probably the night’s best vocal performance but I do feel like her connections were limited and there is a wall up. I needed to feel more from her. This is nowhere to be bad but I needed her to let go more. 7.5

[2] JACK PELLOW
Stressed Out

– Wow. Jack showed that he is capable of doing something comfortable, solid and I thought an impeccable overall performance. His tone sounded beautiful and the arrangement worked on his favor. 8

[1] MIKAELA DEAN
Finally

– That beginning is divine and I thought provided dimension to the whole performance. Mikaela was able to show different sides of her in just one performance and she just showed that she is a capable artist in the real world. Her vocals were soaring – not perfect – but it was enough to rank her as Jessie’s best for the night. 8.5

TEAM RONAN

[3] MITCH GARDNER
Wasn’t Expecting That

– It wasn’t even a bad performance but it felt safe and like a throwaway one. The vocals were good in fact his tone soared and the performance kinda gave us a more front and center vocals from Mitch but the end product is kinda dull and forgettable. 6.5

[2] GEORGIA WIGGINS
Fast Car

– I like some of the vocal choices she did and even if she stumbles towards the end, she picked up and end it beautifully. I thought it was a good rendition with some parts that were really great. 7

[1] TASH LOCKHART
Riptide

– It was actually a solid showing from a different side from Tash. I enjoyed every bit of it. Her vocals were solid and her phrasing sounded pretty. I’m impressed even more. 8

The Voice Australia 5: Top 16

So the live shows starts tonight and the top 16 will battle it out on who will stay on their team. Yup, the franchise is sticking on that format.

So yeah, all of them are performing tonight and then each coach will choose one (1) artist to instantly save for next week’s live show anf then the remaining three (3)’s fate of the team will be decided by the public.

Now onto the performances.

TEAM JESSIE

4. BRIANNA HOLM
Samson

– It was an okay take for me. Her vocals were fine for most part and the hrasing sounded gorgeous. 7

3. JACK PELLOW
Blame It On Me

– This is hands down Jack’s best performance to date. He looked like he was having fun. His voice sounded solid and the beauty of his tone in his voice is more evident that ever. 7.5

2. MIKAELA DEAN
Take Me Home

– It was a fantastic rendition and how she managed to take this song to a more vocal bombast without failing to hit the right notes is remarkable. This is a nice improvement from her chaotic performance last week. 8

1. ELLEN REED
Ghost

– Ellen keeps on impressing me and this is another solid vocal performance from her. She looked very comfortable, her vocals sounded fantastic and her dynamics were impeccable. 8

4. GEORGIA WIGGINS
Hide Away

– There is something mismatch to this performance and I have been a believer of Georgia since day 1 but this is such a disappointment for me. The song choice is too on the nose that she sounded almost like the original but how she drops her verses is a bit uncomfortable for me. 6

3. EMAD YOUNAN
Vincent

– I expected this to be a homerun from Emad but part of it sounded lazy. The whole performance just didn’t connect. 6

2. TASH LOCKHART
Be The One

– I didn’t expect this from Tash but she was able to deliver such solid performance. Her vocals were strong and sounded really good. 7.5

1. MITCH GARDNER
Down Under

– It just came down on how put together this performance from Mitch. His tone sounded terrific than what I expectect and his vocals were almost spot on. Good job! 7.5

4. LANE SINCLAIR
Video Games

– I may get a flak about this but there is something disconnected for me in this performnce. While she sounded good, I was just left cold after. 6.5

3. LEXI CLARK
Rumour Has It

– While the song choice is tired already, Lexi worked on the material to her best of ability. The dynamics were impressive albeit some parts that came off too showboating. 6.5

2. ANDREW LOADSMAN
Say Something

– Andrew is a serious once he mangae to come up something as strong as his blinds. While I thought he did bring something with this song choice, it just didn’t really connect for me. Vocals were still outstanding and the rich tone is still superb but I needed him to make a stronger case on why he should be the front runner. 7

1. AALIYAH WARREN
Welcome To The Black Parade

– The genius arramgement is screaming all sorts of best performance of the night. While still good, Aaliyah’s performance lacks dynamics albeit some really good vocals happening here! 7

TEAM DELTA

4. ADAM LADELL
Imagine

– Am I the only one who didn’t connect with this performance? Probably I would have wanted a slower arrangement but I digress. The staging is good though. 6

3. ELLE MURPHY
Somebody To Love

– I didn’t expect Elle to do well with this performance. She showed comfort, confidence and her vocals were her strongest to date. 7

2. KIM SHEEHY
Heart’s A Mess

– That staging is fantastic backed up with Kim’s solid vocal performance! Great job! 7.5

1. ALFIE ARCURI
Pillowtalk

– The smoothness in his vocals is one of his strongest point but the way he navigated his verses tonight is quite impeccable. Solid phrasing. Great vocals! 8

Alfie Arcuri

The Voice Australia 5: Super Battles (#TeamMadden)

After the Battles, it is time to trim down more people. No SAVES. No SECOND CHANCES. Only 4 ARTISTS are going through to the live shows.

This season, the coaches were asked to seperate their team into 2 groups of 4. Each group are given respective themes to perform and only 2 artists from each group will move forward.

Now let’s see TEAM MADDEN.

Group 1: Aaliyah Warren, Andrew Loadsman, Blake Morgan, Nazzereene Taleb
Theme: Boys & Girls

Group 2: Carmel Rodrigues, Lane Sinclair, Lexi Clark, Talia Giancaspro
Theme: American Anthems

[8] CARMEL RODRIGUES
I’d Do Anything For Love

– Vocals were fine but it was so karaoke backed up with a total rehearsed stage work that left me a bit cold and not caring. 5

[7] BLAKE MORGAN
Dark Horse

– While Blake seems to be committed with this performance but his poor vocal choices and ad libs put his pitch either sharp or flats in parts. 5.5

[6] TALIA GIANCASPRO
Jolene

– Decent but forgettable. Next. 6

[5] AALIYAH WARREN
7 Years

– A bit overdone that cause her pitch to go all over the place but she’s a fighter and this is kinda an in-your-face slap performance to her former coach. I think Aaliyah had tons of potential and she’s ready for primetime unlike what Jessie has been saying before but there are really technical stuff she needs to learn and Jessie could have taught her those if she didn’t gave up on her. 6.5

[4] LEXI CLARK
Seven Nation Army

– Lexi can sing and her take on Seven Nation Army is decent and had some solid moments. Sure I wish she took more chances but I think her strong quality of tone provided a really good case of her versatility. 7

[3] NAZZEREENE TALEB
Earned It

– Nazzereene sounded gorgeous on this and I think she was underated for an already made decision for her group. This wasn’t anything special but at least she hit most of her notes. A bit overdone in parts but I digress. 7

[2] LANE SINCLAIR
I’m On Fire

– The haunting quality of her tone is quite special. She had moments but her phrasing sounded a bit muddled and her pitch kinda got off towards the end. 7

[1] ANDREW LOADSMAN
Lean On

– There was a sense of urgency on this performance that made it somehow identifiable on Andrew. His vocals were as solid as expected but the way he navigated the verses is what made this a really compelling rendition. 7.5

The Voice Australia 5: Super Battles (#TeamDelta)

After the Battles, it is time to trim down more people. No SAVES. No SECOND CHANCES. Only 4 ARTISTS are going through to the live shows.

This season, the coaches were asked to seperate their team into 2 groups of 4. Each group are given respective themes to perform and only 2 artists from each group will move forward.

Next is TEAM DELTA.

Group 1: Adam Ladell, Elle Murphy, MarryAnn Wright, Shirin Majd
Theme: Stage & Screen

Group 2: Alfie Arcuri, Calvin Swart, Kim Sheehy, Marcia Howard
Theme: Homegrown Hits

[8] SHIRIN MAJD
Habañero

– Not really for me. Sorry. 4

[7] MARCIA HOWARD
Throw Your Arms Around Me

– Too dated. 4.5

[6] MARRYANN WRIGHT
I Don’t Know How To Love Him

– Karaoke. 4.5

[5] ELLE MURPHY
Skyfall

– There are parts that sounded decent but got most parts, her notes sounded sharp. 5

[4] KIM SHEEHY
Everyone’s Waiting

– Decent but forgettable. 5.5

[3] ADAM LADELL
Safe & Sound

– Adam sounded pretty here. A couple of wobbly notes and interesting pitch issues, but still a solid showing from him at least. 6

[2] CALVIN SWART
Remind Me

– Solid! Vocals sounded gorgeous and the pitch is lovely. 7

[1] ALFIE ARCURI
Red

– Vocally, I think Alfie has one of the most gorgeous tone in the competition. This is beautiful at its best. Sure he needed some more comfort and confidence on his stage presence. 7

The Voice Australia 5: Super Battles (#TeamJessie)

After the Battles, it is time to trim down more people. No SAVES. No SECOND CHANCES. Only 4 ARTISTS are going through to the live shows.

This season, the coaches were asked to seperate their team into 2 groups of 4. Each group are given respective themes to perform and only 2 artists from each group will move forward.

First up, Team JESSIE J.

Group 1: Ashleigh Marshall, Jack Pellow, Mikaela Dean, The Koi Boys
Theme: The King Of Pop

Group 2: Brianna Holm, Ellen Reed, Maddison McNamara, Nada-Leigh & Jasmin
Theme: Battle Of The Brits

[8] MIKAELA DEAN
They Don’t Know About Us

– I like Mikaela and I thought she’s one of the songest singers in Team Jessie but the song choice was just awful. Like what Ronan and Jessie noted, it was chaotic. The band overpowers her vocals. She didn’t hit all the right notes. So it was a disappointment. 4

[7] BRIANNA HOLM
The Scientist

– While parts of this sounded nice, once Brianna hit those high notes? It sounded shrill and sharp. She lacks control for her pipes. 5

[6] JACK PELLOW
Billie Jean

– Confidence. His unsureness is kinda hampering the potential of a great performance. I could see what he wanted to happen in this performance but it lacks urgency, and the vocals were a bit all over the place. 5.5

[5] ASHLEIGH MARSHALL
Ben

– Ashleigh had that sweet tone especially during her low register but she lacks control and once she hit that high register, it fell flat. 5.5

[4] THE KOI BOYS
P.Y.T

– It was fun but karaoke-ish. The movements were too rehearsed though and it look like an amateur boy band performance. 6

[3] NADA-LEIGH & JASMIN
Wings

– These sisters can sing and their performance of Little Mix’s “Wings”  is decent but forgettable. 6

[2] MADDISON MCNAMARA
Jealous

– Maddison delivered the best that she can with the song. It sounded decent with some of her runs were on point. 6.5

[1] ELLEN REED
Hold My Hand

– Ellen performed well once again. She brought energy. Her vocals were on point. Her dynamics were spot on as well. 7

The Voice Australia 5: Battles (3)

img_0212

Here are the final set of battles. 10 more artists moving forward; 8 winning their battles and the lucky 2 getting the final coaches’ save. Who will make it? Let’s all find out.

LEXI CLARK (vs) CASEY ROSE
Ex’s & Oh’s
Team MADDEN

– This is pretty close with Lexi winning with that more confident stage presence but vocally both girls delivered a really good vocal performance. 7

WINNER: Lexi Clark
ELIMINATED: Casey Rose
STOLEN:

ALFIE ARCURI (vs) ANDREW MCKINNON
Drag Me Down
Team DELTA

– I like this. Probably would’ve wished that they both – especially Alfie – let go on that breakdown and totally rocked it out regardless of the notes taken because the build up was there and both sounded spectacular. Andrew surprised me and I thought Alfie will blow him out of the park easily but he held his own. This is actually a good one. Loved it. 7.5

WINNER: Alfie Arcuri
ELIMINATED: Andrew McKinnon
STOLEN:

BRIANNA HOLM (vs) AALIYAH WARREN
Smells Like Teen Spirit
Team JESSIE

– The song for me is way too big for the girls and I thought they just made the most out of it. Brianna had the better vocals based on that performance but Aaliyah went with better vocal choices. One thing though, why on Earth Jessie wouldn’t be happy that one of her artist got stolen. Sure I got her point that maybe Aaliyah is not yet ready for primetime tv but the experience could make her work hard more and develop the potential that is within her. End of rant. 6

WINNER: Brianna Holm
ELIMINATED:
STOLEN: Aaliyah Warren (Team Madden)

GEORGIA CAREY (vs) KATE VAN ELWISJK
Believe
Team RONAN

– This was a pretty battle albeit sleepy in times. Kate had some interesting tone going on in there but her phrasing is kinda off so that made some of her vocal choices sounded flat. Georgia started really strong but towards the end, she kinda went sharp. But still a pretty good one. 7

WINNER: Georgia Carey
ELIMINATED: Kate Van Elwisjk
STOLEN:

BEN LOGAN (vs) SHIRIN MAJD
The Prayer
Team DELTA

– Eh? Ben is robbed. Not my cup of tea but I thought Ben delivered better vocals. Shirin’s vocals especially during the high register sounded quite sharp. 4

WINNER: Shirin Majd
ELIMINATED: Ben Logan
STOLEN:

TALIA GIANCASPRO (vs) KYLIE JANE
Not Ready To Make Nice
Team MADDEN

– This was actually a good battle. It wasn’t anything groundbreaking or so but both delivered well vocally. I thought Talia had more risk in terms of her vocal choices while Kylie is more sure in terms of the performance. 7

WINNER: Talia Giancaspro
ELIMINATED: Kylie Jane
STOLEN:

MITCH GARDNER (vs) ADAM LADELL
Firestone
Team RONAN

– I wanted to super like this, really. The tone of the both guys were like good. The vocals were fine but I felt like the coaches missed taking point the sharp and flat notes they hit during the performances. I thought Mitch had better vocals over all. 6.5

WINNER: Mitch Gardner
ELIMINATED:
STOLEN: Adam Ladell (Team Delta)

ELLEN REED (vs) CLAIRE HOWELL
Unconditionally
Team JESSIE

– Ellen for me is the clear winner. Though some of her notes were not as point as her blind audition was, she was more precise and her choices were pretty good. Claire had some phrasing problems and some of her vocal choices were I think off pitch. 6.5

WINNER: Ellen Reed
ELIMINATED: Claire Howell
STOLEN:

The Voice Australia 5: Battles (2)

img_0212

More battles! Wow we only have three episodes of battle rounds and I am very much entertained. And a surprising twist and turn at the end of the episode.

Now let us see how the night went.

ILISAVANI CAVA (vs) THE KOI BOYS
Uptown Funk
Team JESSIE

– This was a fun battle to be honest and I thought both artists bring on whatever they can do to showcase what they can. Vocally, not perfect but that imperfections allow a great balance on the battle. The Koi Boys are still good at finding the right connections and harmonies between them although sometimes their pitch is off. Ilisavani on the other hand uses his grit way too much that it sounded grating but he held his own. 7

WINNER: The Koi Boys
ELIMINATED: Ilisavani Cava
STOLEN:

KAYLEIGH KILLICK (vs) ASTRID RIPEPI
Never Forget You
Team RONAN

– Astrid sounded really good and I am surprised with this decision. I thought Astrid brought the right amount of spunk and intensity on this that she easily outshinrs Kayleigh. Interesting. 6.5

WINNER: Kayleigh Killick
ELIMINATED: Astrid Ripepi
STOLEN:

KIM SHEEHY (vs) MAXON
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Team DELTA

– Yikes! There are parts here that sounded nice and some of the dynamics were lovely but there are also parts where both hit a couple of sharp notes. 6

WINNER: Kim Sheehy
ELIMINATED: Maxon
STOLEN:

NATHAN LAMONT (vs) ANDREW LOADSMAN
I Will Wait
Team MADDEN

– Andrew Loadsman is a star. He just needs to find a way not to overdone the vocal choices he is making so that the song that he is singing is still recognizable but other than that he is really made. Nathan held his own but the inevitable has to happen and he is unfortunately the sacrificial lamb. 7

WINNER: Andrew Loadsman
ELIMINATED: Nathan Lamont
STOLEN:

SARAH BROWNE (vs) EMAD YOUNAN
Dancing In The Dark
Team RONAN

– I don’t know what it is but I felt like they are missing their timing but the vocals were pretty good. Emad to be exact is quite a good story teller and his vocals were mostly spot on. 6.5

WINNER: Emad Younan
ELIMINATED: Sarah Browne
STOLEN:

NAZZEREENE TALEB (vs) MADDISON MCNAMARA
Stole The Show
Team MADDEN

– This is pretty good. Nazzereene came out swinging and her vocals were impeccable. Maddison sounded pretty too although she hit a couple of wobbly notes but I thought she held her own. Real good. 7

WINNER: Nazzereene Taleb
ELIMINATED:
STOLEN: Maddison McNamara (Team Jessie)

MARCIA HOWARD (vs) CRISSY ASHCROFT
Wicked Game
Team DELTA

– It sounded dated and halfway it became boring. 4

WINNER: Marcia Howard
ELIMINATED: Crissy Ashcroft
STOLEN:

NADA LEIGH NASSER (vs) JASMIN JADE NASSER
How Come You Don’t Call Me Anymore
Team JESSIE

– Like their blinds, both Nada and Jasmin can sing and both compliments what the other is lacking. To be fair, I thought Jasmin sang better and her choices were pretty spot on. Is it a good idea to make them as a duo? Not sure. It’s risky but I guess Jessie can coach them. This is pretty good battle performance although it felt more like a duet. 7.5

WINNER: Nada & Jasmin*
ELIMINATED:
STOLEN:

* Jessie J cannot choose between the two and ask for the producer’s permission if she can not eliminate one but instead make them as a duo. The contestants agreed as well. A The Voice first.
