The Voice US 8: 20 Best Performances (Wrap-Up)

A total of 32 performances this season that caught my attention. I was giddying enough to appreciate those performances so please bear with me when I say that it was really tough to narrow the list down to the 20 Best Performances and 5 Honorable Mentions.

As a tradition, I usually just choose 20 but with a pool of talent as good as this season, I decided to include honorable mentions so that those who were so close will be rewarded. Haha.

The list is completely bias and subjective. Of course it is by personal taste, so you might not see your favorites or maybe some performances you think were ranked too low or too high will result to our disagreement. But then the way to resolve it is to comment away so I would know your personal list.

Now here is my list for this season.

20. PLEASE
Sawyer Fredericks
Finale

– Sawyer got lucky that this extra song and self-penned of Ray Lamontagne was given to him by the man himself. It was perfectly suited for him and out of the 4 finalists’ original music, his was probably the best and could really chart well in the folk genre. Not to mention, Sawyer’s vocals here were spot on and he was able to convey that connection that is usually cold in his other performances. This performance also is the final nail in sealing his status as the eventual winner of The Voice Season 8. Watch it here.

19. CHICKEN FRIED
Corey Kent White
Blind Auditions

– Corey looked and sound generic on paper but somehow when he started singing this tune, it went all out of the window. Corey sounds very current – country current – that everybody would enjoy in the radio today. His vocals sounded gorgeous. And Corey is very marketable with his looks and boy next door charm. Watch it here.

18. EARNED IT
Rob Taylor
Live PlayOffs

– Rob’s runs were usually overwrought in his early performances but here, it was more controlled. There are dynamics in his performances that made this work. His vocals sounded pretty good: His phrasing – a little muddled – but better. Plus, the way he navigated the verses of his performance is really compelling. Good job! Watch it here.

17. IT’S A MAN’S MAN’S MAN’S WORLD
Koryn Hawthorne
Finale

– Koryn gave out the best performance of the night during the finale. It’s just unfortunate she end up in the last place and she performed first. The vocals here were really strong and solid. Her phrasing is gorgeous and this is her best enunciated verses she ever had. Watch it here.

16. STAY
India Carney & Clinton Winston
Battle Rounds

– It was a stellar battle. What’s best thing about this battle is that it never really felt like a battle. Both India and Clinton’s vocals were gorgeous. The harmonies were tight and beautiful. The vocal choices were spot on. There are really fun battles during this season but this one completely blew them out of the water. Watch it here.

15. THE THRILL IS GONE
Mia Z
Blind Auditions

– Her runs reminds me of Mariah Carey and Ariana Grande combined. It was delicious, tasty and gorgeously sound. Her phrasing sounded lovely and her vocals were spot on. Mia had this appeal that draws you in and the blues on her delivery gave out so much soul and texture. This is really good. Watch it here.

14. DIRTY DIANA
Kimberly Nichole
Top 6

– The power vocals were outstanding. Kimberly commanded the stage like no other and her vocals were not just big and bizarre, but they were crazy good. That back bend was an art! This performance was intese – in a good way – that I was wanting for more after. Watch it here.

13. GRAVITY
India Carney
Top 5

– Who knew India can pull something as delicate as this? It was a right mixture of restraint and power. Her vocal choices were spot on. Her runs were not too much and she was able to control her vibratto which was an issue from her since the beginning of the competition. Also, this is her most connected on a song to date. Watch it here.

12. ARMS OF A WOMAN
Joshua Davis
Knockouts

– Joshua is a fantastic story teller. The way he navigated the verses of this song is soothing with so much emotion and powerful attachment that made the whole performance compelling, emotional and beautifully sang. Watch it here.

11. SAY MY NAME
Travis Ewing
Blind Auditions

– The risk that he took with the song choice earned him enough extra points. To tackle a woman song and not just by a solo artist but by an R&B group is risky but Travis made it work. His rendition of this Destiny’s Child hit is gorgeous. It was sexy, sultry but masculine enough. His vocals were gorgeous and his phrasing sounded very lovely. Watch it here.

10. MAKE YOU FEEL MY LOVE
Corey Kent White
Live PlayOffs

– Corey took a song and interpret it beautifully. His tone is dominating the track but not in a bad way. He was able to convey the right emotions, phrased the verses gorgeously and deliver an honest, lovely and sincere version of this song. Probably his best to date. Watch it here.

9. HOLD ON, I’M COMING
Mia Z
Knockouts

– Mia has this appeal that is very her. Her tone is simply gorgeous and pleasantly quirky. That quirk is not polarizing but you know that it is her. The song actually allowed Mia to navigate the verses beautifully. Her vocal choices were fantastic and the liberty he took with the song is fantastic! Watch it here.

8. I AM A MAN OF A CONSTANT SORROW
Sawyer Fredericks
Blind Auditions

– Different but cool. Unpretentious and flattering. His tone made him sound like no other. His audition was gorgeous. It was simple, relevant and annoyingly beautiful. At first, I really felt iffy with his tone but as the performance went on, it was actually a very good audition. Watch it here.

7. GIRL CRUSH
Meghan Linsey
Top 12

– The girl who screams her lungs out! The girl has no chill but somehow during this week, she was able to control her hoarse vocal powers and deliver a stunning interpretation of Littel Big Town’s current hit. There is a control in here. She connected well with the track. Her vocals were pleasantly lovely. Really good job! Watch it here.

6. SKINNY LOVE
Brooke Adee
Blind Auditions

– This is my faborite audition this season. Brooke’s voice just won me over from the moment she opened her mouth to the times she navigated the verses of this song. It was solid, vocally spot on and overall fantatsic! Watch it here.

5. EARTH SONG
India Carney
Top 5

– This is the week where India brought and she managed to go out of the competition with flying colors. I mean how can people not vote for her two marvelous performance that night is unbelievable. Her best work? The “Earth Song”. It was just vocally spot on! Her phrasing sounded fantastic. Her choices were moving. The intensity and power she put in the song is something that we haven’t really saw from her. It was just right there – powerful but not screamy, intense but not too much and it was just a great performance overall. Watch it here.

4. AIN’T NO SUNSHINE
Mia Z
Live PlayOffs

– Mia’s bluesy take on the song gave a huge contrast from what we usually hear when artists’ do an interpretation of this. Her vocals sounded really gorgeous. The liberties she took were spot on and her phrasing is simply beautiful. Watch it here.

3. MAKE IT RAIN
Koryn Hawthorne
Top 10

– This is Koryn’s breakout moment. It was just a gorgeous vocal performance! It was full of raw power and solid vocals. Great stuff! Watch it here.

2. HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN
Kimberly Nichole
Top 12

– Kimberly is a beast! Her take with this song is simply outstanding. It was vocally great. It was beautifully delivered. Kimberly is just an amazing performer! Watch it here.

1. WHAT’S UP
Kimberly Nichole
Live PlayOffs

– HOLY COW, she’s a vocal beast! Amazing performance. Enough said. Watch it here.

The Voice US 8: Finale Part 2 (Winner Announced)

SAYWER FREDERICKS is THE VOICE SEASON 8 WINNER!!!!

Surprise! Surprise! Not. Haha. We all saw this coming especially if you have watched this season from Blinds ’til last night’s finale performance show. Sawyer Fredericks of Team Pharrell is a runaway winner. He has been consistently doing well on itunes sales and even those times he did poorly in terms of performance? He still manage to sell his songs on itunes and escaped the bottom sing off. This kid has people and it proves as his two songs ranked 2 and 3 on itunes, only behind Taylor Swift’s Bad Blood.

Nonetheless, I think we had a really strong crop of contestants on The Voice this season and even if we had a very predictable ending, I still think this season had a good run. Will Sawyer Fredericks will be finally this show’s breakout artist? It has been an argument since forever that The Voice hasn’t really produced any singing superstar even if they are winning in ratings game.

Okay, the finale results night is jam-packed with performances from both guest artists and the Top 20. We also saw the coaches performed a tribute for B.B King.

Here are some highlights of tonight’s finale show.

Adam, Christina, Pharrell and Blake performed The Thrill Is Gone as a tribute for B.B King.

Kelly Clarkson is in this house which weirded me out a bit but then she’s nailing this duet with finalist, Koryn Hawthorne. They sang, I’d Rather Go Blind. This is so gooood!

Meghan Trainor is also here, singing a different arrangement of her song Dear Future Husband.

Luke Bryan also performs and even if he is such a cutie, I hated this song. Lol.

• Fillers of the Coaches which is a season tradition. Funny clips especially the ones of Christina and Blake Shelton.

Kelly Clarkson is doing a double duty? She’s back on stage with finalist, Meghan Linsey and they sang her new song, Invincible.

Ed Sheeran also performs tonight. This time he sings, Photograph. Yesss!

Sheryl Crow is joined by finalist, Joshua Davis and they perform Give it to me. Lovely duet, I must say.

John Fogerty is sing with eventual champ, Sawyer Fredericks. John outshining Sawyer in an effortless fashion. Haha.

Maroon 5 are also here and they perform, This Summer’s Gonna Hurt…. I don’t dig this song as much as their first three songs released.

Meghan Linsey invited fellow Team Blake artist, Sarah Potenza for a Piece Of My Heart duet. This is a shout fest.

Joshua Davis sings She Talks To Angels with Corey Kent White, Brian Johnson, Deanna Johnson and Kimberly Nichole. It can do well with Kimberly alone. Haha.

Sawyer Fredericks is singing Lie To Me with Mia Z, Brooke Adee and Lowell Oakley.

• For her bring back performance, Koryn Hawthorne is singing Uptown Funk with Tonya-Boyd Cannon, Caitlin Caporale, India Carney, Mia Z and Lexi Davila. This is GIRL POWER!!!

• Winners were announced at the end of the show and I got it right:

3rd Runner-Up: Koryn Hawthorne (Team Pharrell)
2nd Runner-Up: Joshua Davis (Team Adam)
1st Runner-Up: Meghan Linsey (Team Blake)
Winner: Sawyer Fredericks (Team Pharrell)

This is the first win of Pharrell and he even got a win than veteran coach, Christina? Haha girl needs to keep herself in the game again.

The Voice US 8: Finale Part 1 (Performance Night)

Bring me back to 2015!!!! To be honest, I was bored in this finale performance with a couple of stand out performances. The song choices for duets were odd. The individual song choices were so dated. The original songs were fine but I find them not as radio friendly like last season’s original songs.

Tonight, Team Pharrell’s Sawyer Fredericks & Koryn Hawthorne, Team Blake’s Meghan Linsey and Team Adam’s Joshua Davis will perform for the votes of the people. Tomorrow night, we will crown yet another The Voice Champion.

Too bad, Christina hasn’t have again no artist in the finale. Girl, got high hopes from you! Haha.

Anyway here is how the night went.

ROUND 1: SOLO PERFORMANCES

[4] MEGHAN LINSEY
When A Man Loves A Woman
Team BLAKE

– Girl, stop screaming! Meghan sings like she always need to be at 10 or higher and I feel really exhausted after her performance. This is just… screamy for me. 5

[3] SAWYER FREDERICKS
Old Man
Team PHARRELL

– I didn’t like the arrangement of this. I liked the acoustic version during the rehearsals, that sounded better. This felt uneven in parts and Sawyer’s vocals and the arrangement didn’t really meet halfway, so the feeling that it was all over the place is there. 5.5

[2] JOSHUA DAVIS
Hallelujah
Team ADAM

– It was bland, sleepy and decent. Yes, the vocals were fine but there are no liberties he took to make it more dynamic. I also felt disconnected in his performance which is unusual because he usually knows how to connect. But this is decent but not remotely memorable. 6

[1] KORYN HAWTHORNE
It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World
Team PHARRELL

– I wanted this song to retire already in this singing competitions. But you know what, Koryn slayed this song. Her vocals were spot on. The dynamics were intense but not too much. The phrasing was fantastic and she worked on her intonation and enunciation pretty well, so everything just worked well together. Hands down the best of the night. 8.5

ROUND 2: ARTIST-COACH DUETS

[4] SAWYER FREDERICKS (w/ PHARRELL)
Summer Breeze

– I’m not sure how to compliment this duet but I must say, Pharrell can’t sing a tune here no? Haha. Nonetheless, this is vocally awkward and uneven. Bland. Forgetful. Boring. Sleepy. 5

[3] JOSHUA DAVIS (w/ ADAM LEVINE)
Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes

– Just like Sawyer and Pharrell, this is also boring. Seriously? Adam can do better than this duet and he proved it during his duets with Christina Grimmie (Season 6), Chris Jamison (Season 7) and Matt McAndrew (Season 7).. so this is really a let down. Even the vocals here are weak. 5.5

[2] MEGHAN LINSEY (w/ BLAKE SHELTON)
Freeway Of Love

– Oh Gawd. What is happening? Blake is clearly out of his element. They can do something from the country genre… why do this? Ugh. This is just unfortunate. A couple of good notes but mostly terrible vocal choices. 5.5

[1] KORYN HAWTHORNE (w/ PHARRELL)
We Can Work It Out

– Koryn did her best of what she can come out of this odd song choice. Pharrell was mostly whispering. Haha. I don’t know. I can do better with Koryn alone here. Though, she’s struggling to keep the pitch fine, she’s having a blast. 6

ROUND 3: ORIGINAL SONGS

[4] MEGHAN LINSEY
Change My Mind
Team BLAKE

– While the single sounds nice and Meghan finally tone it down a bit with her vocals, the song didn’t have that hook to make it memorable. It was a decent track. 6.5

[3] KORYN HAWTHORNE
Bright Fire
Team PHARRELL

– It’s a nice contrast from what we used to hear from Koryn. Here she showed that she can do uptempo/midtempo track. It lacks energy but it is still a decent effort. Her vocals were pretty fine too. A little breathy in parts. But this is average. 7

[2] JOSHUA DAVIS
the Workingman’s Hymn
Team ADAM

– Clearly, this is right in his alley. The folk quality suits him well. The vocals were spot on. The song got this hook that could go long way. The track is something you know is personal for him. It even has the vibe that made it less sleepy. 7

[1] SAWYER FREDERICKS
Please
Team PHARRELL

– This is like tailor made for him. It is like he was the one who wrote it. It matches his voice. I am not a fan of his voice and I could still not compeletely wrap myself around him but this is a pretty good track for Sawyer. The vocals were good. 7.5

The Voice US 8: Top 5 – Results

The Voice US 8 - Results

Walk The Moon performs tonight. Their single, “Shut up and dance”, is doing great in radio stations and music charts and even on itunes sales. This was produced last year but the song peaked this year which is an absolute cheer. Also, Snoop Dogg performs tonight as well as two group performances from the remaining 5 artists.

Tonight, 5 artists will turn into 4 as we head to the season finale next week. Will Adam, Blake or Christina get wiped out tonight? Or Will Pharrell make it to the finale with still two artists remaining? We will all find out.

SAFE

Sawyer Fredericks (Team Pharrell)
Meghan Linsey (Team Blake)
Joshua Davis (Team Adam)

No surprises there because of how well those three had sold their songs on itunes. Sawyer was the itunes God! That kid made both of his songs in the top 10 making both be multiplied by 10. Damn. I predicted the same bottom 2 with India, she’s not really connecting with the audience despite having a strong and wonderful performances last night while Koryn, even if she did well too, she didn’t really chart that well.

BOTTOM 2

KORYN HAWTHORNE
If I Were A Boy
Team PHARRELL

– Her vocals were shaky, as usual, but that solid quality of her voice is really admirable. She’s giving her all and she enunciates better here than last night. I must say, there are pitch problems here and there. 7

INDIA CARNEY
Dark Side
Team CHRISTINA

– Oops. The girl is shaky and this is a big let down from her incredible night last night. Her vocals were all over the place and the song somehow swallowed her up. Plus, she was off key most of the time. 6

KORYN HAWTHORNE (Team Pharrell) is INSTANTLY SAVED!

The Voice US 8: Live Shows (Top 5)

Christina, Adam and Blake only has one member left for their team, while Pharrell is rallying two people for the finale next week. Most probably, Pharrell will win this because of Sawyer Fredericks who has been killing it in the itunes charts every single week.

I find it hard to root for any of the remaining contestants to be honest. Aw.

Tonight each contestant will sing two songs and they had their homecoming.

Now let us rank the remaining five artist that will battle it out on who will get those 4 tickets to the finale next week.

ROUND 1: COACH’S PICKS

5. MEGHAN LINSEY
I’m Not The Only One
Team BLAKE

– The country-fied version was off. Her vocals were shaky. The arrangement didn’t exactly worked. Her delivery became shouty from the middle towards the end. This was just almost painful. 5

4. JOSHUA DAVIS
I Can’t Make You Love Me
Team ADAM

– While the vocals sounded smooth and silky here and the rasp quality on her voice provided some dynamics. But the overall delivery was just boring and sleepy. 6

3. SAWYER FREDERICKS
For What It’s Worth
Team PHARRELL

– This was the same thing Sawyer has been doing every week and I never really saw what is new about it. Again, the vocals were pretty decent but nothing spectacular. 6.5

2. KORYN HAWTHORNE
One
Team PHARRELL

– It was almost homerun but the vocals here were a bit shaky. Plus, the vocals sounded hoarsed a bit. But then this is a decent showing from Koryn and there are moments that are pretty. 7

1. INDIA CARNEY
Gravity
Team CHRISTINA

– I actually liked this. The restrained she delivered was quite beautiful. Her vocals were front and center. This is really nice. Not perfect but quite nice. 7.5

ROUND 2: HOMETOWN DEDICATION

5. JOSHUA DAVIS
When I Paint My Masterpiece
Team ADAM

– I’m not sure if the arrangement completely worked but the bluegrass quality somehom made Joshua’s performance a bit livelier. Still, the vocals were tad sleepy. 7

4. MEGHAN LINSEY
Tennessee Whiskey
Team BLAKE

– It was simple albeit over the top vocals again in most parts but this is way better than the first one. It was right on Meghan’s alley and she was able to connect fully with the song. This is quite good. 7.5

3. SAWYER FREDERICKS
A Thousand Years
Team PHARRELL

– This is for me Sawyer’s best performance of the season so far. His vocals, a bit affected, but his strongest to date. I never thought this will work, but he did worked the song beautifully. The arrangement also worked here which is unusual because Sawyer’s performances are usually the same every single week. 8

2. INDIA CARNEY
Earth Song
Team CHRISTINA

– The vocals here were solid and strong. This is India’s best performance to date for me. I didn’t like the sing choice but the theatrics, the vocals and the drama and even the staging worked beautifully here! 8

1. KORYN HAWTHORNE
Oh, Mary Don’t You Weep
Team PHARRELL

– This is spectacular! This is like “Make it rain” all over again and she provided really good vocals and great staging. Not a fan of the religious song choice but somehow I didn’t mind afterall. 8.5

KORYN HAWTHORNE

The Voice US 8: Top 6 – Results

The Voice US 8 - Results

It’s a night of alumnas in tonight’s results episode of The Voice. From a strong six (6), the night will end with only five (5) artist battling it out for next week’s show.

Jacquie Lee (runner up of Season 5), Craig Wayne Boyd (winner of Season 7), Vicci Maryinez (2nd runner up of Season 1) and Avery Wilson (contestant of Season 3) all performed their respective new singles on tonight’s results show.

Anyway, are we having a surprise boot? We will see.

SAFE

Sawyer Fredericks (Team Pharrell)
Meghan Linsey (Team Blake)
Koryn Hawthorne (Team Pharrell)
Joshua Davis (Team Adam)

I was actually thinking the same bottom 2 base on how the show went last night. These two are not weakest vocalists to be honest but I guess America got tired of too much diva (power vocalists) on the show that they want to sent at least one (1) home.

BOTTOM 2

INDIA CARNEY
Perfect
Team CHRISTINA

– The timing is a little off for me and she hit a couple of bum and wobbly notes but there is something genuine in her delivery that we have bee missing from her past performances. This felt more natural for her. 6.5

KIMBERLY NICHOLE
Seven Nations Army
Team CHRISTINA

– Easily, the better between the two. Her vocals soared beautifully. The thing is it was technically great but I am disconnected the whole time. 7.5

The Voice US 8: Live Shows (Top 6)

There is something about tonight’s episode that doesn’t really sit well with me. Not that the performances were bad, in fact, we saw some fantastic ones being delivered on the voice stage. But up to this point, unlike any other season, I don’t know why I am not yet rooting or very invested with someone. Sure we have arguably the best crop of talents in the voice US franchise to date, but there is really something that I appreciate for a moment but wouldn’t really care for the next days not until they perform again the following week. If my point is making sense to you, I think you will get me.

Anyway, each artists were singing TWO songs tonight. One will go home tomorrow night. Let’s see how the night went.

12. LAY ME DOWN
India Carney
Team CHRISTINA

– There is nothing really bad about her version of this Sam Smith song but I miss the emotions here. I feel like India’s delivery is very theatrical, very rehearsed and very played by numbers. Her vocals were fine as well with a little jarring effect on her use of vibrato. 6

11. DESIRE
Joshua Davis
Team ADAM

– The band overpower the almost smokey, quiet quality of Joshua’s voice. At some point, when he tried to rock the song out, his phrasing suffers. The vocals were uneven here as well but there are moments here that shine. 6

10. STEAMROLLER BLUES
Meghan Linsey
Team BLAKE

– She immediately hit her performance with a 10 in the beginning and because of that the performance felt like she was screaming at us the entire time. Again, this is a case where I felt rurally exhausted from all the vocal power that she showcased in here. It is just dragging and exhausting overall. 6

9. SHINE ON
Sawyer Fredericks
Team PHARRELL

– Sleepy and boring. My problem here is that it feels like I’ve seen the same old, same thing kind of performance from Sawyer in this aspect. His vocals were undeniably beautiful in this song that the first time I’ve heard but halfway through, I almost fell asleep. 6.5

8. DREAM ON
Koryn Hawthorne
Team PHARRELL

– Her vocals were solid but she wasn’t able to sustain the glory notes when it is needed. There is also a lack of connection from her delivery and her vocals were pretty decent to flat. Flat in a way that there is no clear dynamics here, just verses hovering around circles. 6.5

7. GLORY
India Carney
Team CHRISTINA

– While her delivery of Glory started really beautiful, I feel like the rap verses that actually created the texture from the original was lost when she tried to diva-fied it. It was a risky move for her but I didn’t think it was fully successful. Nonetheless, there are bright moments here but in an overall effect, I just didn’t really care. 6.5

6. FREE FALLIN’
Kimberly Nichole
Team CHRISTINA

– I’ve waited for her to tackle something simple, earnest and no power diva belting. I was actually cited for this becauseI thought this will be refreshing. I blame the song choice because i think it was pitched under her voice that most of her notes were sharp, if not overly wrought. I wish she had chosen a different song. 6.5

5. IN MY LIFE
Joshua Davis
Team ADAM

– This is the kind of performance Joshua should always do. His vocals were undeniably smooth, silky and beautifully phrased. 7

4. TAKE ME TO THE RIVER
Sawyer Fredericks
Team PHARRELL

– While the production is a little distracting, this is a refreshing kind of performance from Sawyer. His vocals were decent but solid. But what I like here the most is the groove is pretty tight and the vocals were really front and center. 7

3. EVERYBODY HURTS
Koryn Hawthorne
Team PHARRELL

– Despite the fact that her vocals were not perfect, you just wouldn’t care afterwards because of the way she delivered this song. It was genuine, quiet and beautiful. Her phrasing got a little muddled especially when she became a little too involved with the song but the solid, fiery quality in her voice just sold it to me. Really nice! 7.5

2. AMAZING GRACE
Meghan Linsey
Team BLAKE

– There’s a beauty in that acoustic breakaway in the beginning that I thought was magical and lovely. It felt really ethereal to the point that I didn’t really mind if once again Blake Shelton is trying to play the religion card. This was beautifully performed with Meghan’s vocals winning over the emotions and she didn’t overwrought the tired song choice ha. It was simple and honest at its best. 7.5

1. DIRTY DIANA
Kimberly Nichole
Team CHRISTINA

– Was it her best performance? No. Was it the right song choice? Maybe. But Kimberly definitely entertained me. With her powerful vocals, great stage presence and command, and the undeniably winning performance.. this easily catapulted at the top of this week’s best performance. It was powerful, dynamic and entertaining! Great stuff here! 8
