The Voice 9: Live PlayOffs (1)

It’s the first night of the Live PlayOffs and as we all know there are some changes happening on the show. First up, VOTING are now exclusively for online such as in the The Voice App and iTunes downloads. Second is the introduction of the new WILDCARD TWIST where each coach will bring back one eliminated artist to join his/her team omce again.

First to tonight’s Live PlayOffs are Team Adam & Team Gwen. We will welcome Ellie Lawrence as Gwen’s Wild Card while Adam picked young singer, Chance Peña as his wildcard choice. On Wednesday’s result show, half of each team will go home! Scarrry.

Now on to the show.

TEAM ADAM

6. KEITH SEMPLE
To Be With You

– There’s nothing really bad in any of Team Adam’s acts last night. It is just Keith’s performance felt the weakest out of his team. His voice goes thin during the high notes but it was still a decent, good overall performance from Keith. 6.5

5. BLAINE MITCHELL
Never Tear Us Apart

– It was I think a perfect fit for Blaine as he was able to show his ability to command the stage and work on how good his vocals. Unfortunately for some parts, he can’tmix both up and one has to give way for the other to really shine. 7

4. AMY VACHAL
The Way You Look Tonight

– Gorgeous vocals. Lovely tone. But I felt at some point the whole thing was a bit lazy and sleepy. 7

3. CHANCE PEÑA
Barton Hollow

– Surprisingly, the song choice worked so well for Chance. It was like far from the disaster his KOs was. The texture in his voice is fantastic. That grit worked so well and he had found a more confident stage presence that is lacking before. 7

2. SHELBY BROWN
You’re No Good

– Sure she hit a couple of wobbly notes in the beginning but once Shelby picked up, she never looked back. Her vocals were still her biggest asset and she’s more comfortable now. 7

1. JORDAN SMITH
Halo

– Vocally, it was superb. He was able to infused new style, new vocal ad libs and some gorgeous risks with his voice. But there is something lacking and I can’t pinpoint it but Jordan is a force to reckon with in this competition. He just sings so good! 7.5

TEAM GWEN

6. REGINA LOVE
Hello

– Disaster! I know I have been asking for Regina to give us something current but she just overdone this new Adele song. She lacks control. She was underpitch in most parts. Sigh. 3

5. BRAIDEN SUNSHINE
Everything I Own

– Cheesy, decent karaoke delivery from Braiden. 4

4. KORIN BUKOWSKI
Adia

– Why now Korin? The song choice was perfect for her I think albeit too on the nose but her lack of confidence showed here as she hit a couple of sharp & flat notes. But still the power of her voice is simply gorgeous. I hope Gwen chose a more familiar song for her though. I am now afraid she will not reach the Top 12 especially with Ellie back, another quirky voice like her. 6.5

3. ELLIE LAWRENCE
Ex’s & Oh’s

– This is miles better than her KOs. Gwen should always choose songs for her. This was fun, exciting and right on Ellie’s alley. Her vocals were fine. She was playful and confident. 7

2. VIKTOR KIRALY
All Around The World

– Viktor proved that he is a made star. He showed it here. His stage presence is oozing with so much confidence and he is distrubingly so beautiful! Although his voice wasn’t in his strongest element, it was still a different side of him that I thought worked. 7

1. JEFFERY AUSTIN
Say You Love Me

– Jeffery is the underrated artist on the show period. He is flying under the radar and they should take him seriously as a competitor as he just delivers everytime! This is yet another solid showing from him. His vocals – not perfect – is oozing with so much power and soul. His connection is spot on. Great job! 8

The Voice US 8: Live Play-Offs (#TeamChristina)

Woah!!! Christina is back and in an ironic contrast, if Adam’s team this season is his weakest.. this is probably Christina’s strongest team to date. If I don’t jinx it, Christina might be the team to beat this season. Sure her crop of artists are not as diverse as Blake, but these divas and R&B singer could actually be real threats!

It is a really good night for Christina’s team as I thought, despite some issues, her team just nailed their performances!

Here is how I rank Christina’s team.

[5] Lexi Davila
All By Myself

– I think even if she did good, Christina is already set with her team prior to stealing her. She just needs to use that “steal”. Despite some overembellishments she did with the song, there are parts where she sounded really good. There are moments where she look and sound tentative and that bum note at the end didn’t really gave her enough favors. But she made it at this point, at which I never really expected since I written her off after her Blinds. Haha. 5

[4] Sonic
I’m Going Down

– I wanted to like this. I thought this is a perfect suit for Sonic but there is something on her delivery that just underwhelms me. Her vocals were decent in parts but she was really off pitch in most parts. The vocal choices were okay but it didn’t really move me. 6

[3] Rob Taylor
Earned It

– This is Rob’s best performance to date. I thought it was like tailor-made for him. But I just didn’t like how he over done the track. It felt more like showboating. But the effortless transitions and the gorgeous vocals really sold me. I didn’t like his phrasing though. 7.5

[2] India Carney
Hurt

– Hm. I thought her vibratto here was a little out of control and some parts were pitchy. This is a tough song to sing and I never really think one could actually top what Christina has done with the song. It was risky but I just didn’t think it 100% worked for her. That being said, there are moments that are golden here. 7.5

[1] Kimberly Nichole
What’s Up

– This is fantastic! I mean, the vocals here were glorious. The grit, the power, the delivery.. it was just stunning! Kimberly just nailed the song and I absolutely loved it! Her phrasing sounded nice. The transition and vocal choices were amazing. This is actually pretty strong showing from Kimberly and probably my favorite performance of her, to date. 9

The Voice US 8: Live Play-Offs (#TeamAdam)

If I’ll be very honest, this is Adam’s weakest team to date. Maybe he has one to two artists that could win or at least go far but the other three were average singers. But the good thing with Adam is that he really is good in choosing songs for his artists despite him probably having some of the worst decisions on the series ever. Haha.

Nonetheless, I just can’t really wrap up myself on the idea of who he will choose for his third artist but I am like 80% sure of who will made it to his top 3.

Here is how I rank his artists tonight.

[5] Nathan Hermida
Chains

– There are parts that were decent here and I like the grit inflections on the song. But the awkward delivery and uneven vocals made this performance underwhelming average. 6

[4] Tonya Boyd-Cannon
Take Me To The Pilot

– This is vocally good but nothing really spectacular. It’s very predictable. The vocals were fine. The song choice, I thought was outdated. Again, this is just something we already expected from her. 6.5

[3] Brian Johnson
At This Moment

– Just like Tonya, this performance is nothing new from Brian. It is predictable, decent and nothing really special. The vocals here were his best to date. 6.5

[2] Joshua Davis
Budapest

– While I do prefer the version of Dean Ray (X Factor Australia 6), there is no denying that his voice is like butter, silky and smooth. A couple of wobbly lower notes but this sounds really nice. 7

[1] Deanna Johnson
Down To The River To Pray

– She’s so pretty! The song choice actually worked for her but again like yesterday, I am not much of a fan of such. Her vocals though were really good but I wish Adam explored a better song choice here. 7.5

The Voice US 8: Live Play-Offs (#TeamBlake)

Live Play-Offs start tonight. First two coaches will present their top 5 and the other two teams will perform tomorrow night. Results will happen on the third night which will go head to head to American Idol live shows! Haha.

First up, current champ Blake Shelton and his team which I think is really ecclectic this season. He has country, an indie singer, a rocker, pop singer and soul. Blake knows the drill and all in all, I think he made really smart choices in terms of song choices that will make it hard to predict who and who will be his top 3 going to the final 12.

Without further adieu, here is how I rank his team.

[5] Brooke Adee
Love Me Like You Do

– On paper, this is perfect for Brooke and I will say this, I still love her and her blind auditions might be one of my favorites this season but there is a tentativeness in tonight’s performance that is evident. Her low notes were glorious but the high ones – though rich – is a little sharp. But I an still hoping she will make it. I like her. 6

[4] Meghan Linsey
Love Runs Out

– Oh God.. this was not bad but not good as well. I’m glad that Blake made her current with the song choice and she needs that but the vocals here were a little rough. Usually, she hits them perfectly but in here the dynamics were messy. Her high registers were a little sharp and those low notes were shaky. The second half felt like she took the screaming to another level but the wobbly effect made them uneven to listen. 6

[3] Hannah Kirby
I Feel The Earth Move

– I’m not a fan of Hannah and this isn’t really something that would change my mind. To be fair though, I thought she sounded really good here. Still, I have a problem with her intonation and phrasing but I will be very honest that I think this is my favorite performance from her to date. Vocally not as good as let’s say, last week but as a whole performance – albeit being too shouty – this is pretty much good. 7

[2] Sarah Potenza
Freebird

– She has that old school rock voice that actually works in the track. As a whole, I am not sure if it was memorable enough. Her vocals were fine. This was a decent performance but I worry that she went first that at the end of the episode, people can’t remember what she performed. 7

[1] Corey Kent White
To Make You Feel My Love

– Seriously, I love this guy’s voice and he is a country singer which is I am not that a fan of. His delivery isn’t perfect at all but there is a genuine, sweet vocal performance in here that I love. His voice is just fantastic. His connection with the song is impeccable. This is really beautiful to be honest. 8
