67th Primetime EMMY Awards – List of Nominees

Uzo Aduba and Cat Deeley announced the nominees of the 67th EMMY Awards this morning and I must say there are really a lot of surprised and snubs this year.

Golden Globe winner Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin), The Affair and its lead stars Dominic West and Golden Globe winner Ruth Wilson were also snubbed. The long list of snubs will continue. Jane Fonda (Grace & Frankie), Big Bang Theory, Parenthood, Looking, The Americans, Bates Motel, Eva Green (Penny Dreadful), CW’s The Flash, Masters of Sex, Fox’s hit Empire, The Walking Dead, Fresh Off The Boat and it’s leag, Constance Wu, and a whole lot more have been shut down big time.

But with snubs, there are a couple of deserving surprises like finally Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) scored her first EMMY nomination and Lisa Kudrow (The Comeback) is recognized for her fantastic body of work. Also, Amy Schumer also scored one especially her film Trainwreck is showing this Friday.

EMMYS 2015: Outstanding Drama Series (Dream Nominees)

The nominations have been made and on July 16, 2015, the nominees will be announced. It has been an annual event in American television where the best of the best of primetime television were recognized by the Academy of Television, Arts & Sciences.

Of course, the possible nominees were rallied by shows that were part & showed in an eligible year from June 1, 2014 to May 31, 2015.

As a fun little thing on my blog, I would rack up some of my dream nominees on different major categories from Drama and Comedy. I must say, I had the greatest opportunity to catch a lot of series of both comedy and drama. So yeah.

Not in particular order, here are my dream 5 nominees for OUTSTANDING DRAMA SERIES

1. Bates Motel (A&E)
– For one, Vera Farmiga and Freddie Highmore will sold the entire run of the series with so much thrill and craziness. Aside from their amazing acting chops, Bates Motel made me want to look forward to what will happen next and be excited of the scenarios that will mold the story telling of the series.

2. How To Get Away With Murder (ABC)
– With a cast as compelling as the this, you would think that they will overshadow the story line. But no. How to get away with murder managed to keep the audience on the edge of their seat, guessing and the thrilling process of figuring out what just had happened. This is a series that is not just about getting away with murder or Annaliese epic law teachings or the sex scenes or the brokenness of Annaliese, it was a variety of emotions and I love it.

3. Hannibal (NBC)
– It was weird at some point but a good kind of weird. I love this series and it is a crime that the Academy has been ignoring it for a nomination or even for the trophy. The sequences were nice. The writing was superb. The acting was top notch. This series is best discussed and appreciated if you will be able to watch it rather than just talk about it. Because the little details of its visuals added texture to an already solid product.

4. The Flash (CW)
– This modern storytelling of a comic favorite is probably one of the best works of CW network. It was fresh but still manage to keep faithful to what it was adapted to. Grant Gustin shines easily and he was the perfect lead and even the villains were so compelling sometimes you root for them not to get kicked out of the show. It was in totality, a series that worked so well from the narrative to its actors and to its exciting episodes.

5. The Affair (Showtime)
– It was crafted pretty well. The narrative was compelling. The script was well written. The leads – Ruth Wilson & Dominic West – delivered a fanttsic performance and they were so good. It was a series that was both smart and affectionate. Go check it out!

Not in particular order, here are my dream 5 nominees for LEAD ACTRESS in a DRAMA SERIES

1. Tatiana Maslany, Orphan Black
– To portray not just 1, not just 2, not just 3, but literally multiple characters in a series is a challenge itself. But the biggest thing about Tatiana’s performance is that she was able to distinguish each and every character from one another and boy she delivered. You just have to feel something in every character whether you root for that character or be mad at her or be happy. It was a roller coaster ride of emotions and experience but I don’t mind especially if Tatiana is delivering each and every episode. It’s such a shame that in the past, the Academy has been shutting her down for a much deserve nomination or even a win. Hope it changes this year.

2. Viola Davis, How To Get Away With Murder
– Broken, messed up, super flawed. That is Annaliese on the show but the wag Viola facades the character with so much confidence and power makes you think this girl is dominant and strong. But if you actually watch the whole series (in particular, when she was removing the make up and wig, or her confrontation-talk with her mother), Annaliese is a broken woman. She is human after-all. She has so much emotional baggage on her that the only way to stop the bleeding is to be upfront strong, and Viola Davis managed to show that perfectly.

3. Taylor Schilling, Orange Is The New Black
– Since OITNB was relegated for Drama instead of Comedy this year, Taylor Schilling will surely be in the running for the many viable actress to take a slot on the nominees. But here’s what I like about Taylor, whether it is comedy or drama, I am so excited about her. When she’s on the frame, you just can’t help but be astonished by her. She was nuanced backed up with a layered performance that was both compelling and stunning.

4. Eva Green, Penny Dreadful
– Did you watch that episode where she was possessed? That was golden. But prior to that, Eva Green has been delivering a stellar performance on the series that it is so hard to not recognized how she managed to keep us excited (maybe more thrilled?) and mesmerized (or blown away?) on her portrayal as Vanessa Ives – whether it was the Victorean alter-ego or it was her self. So much goodness!

5. Taraji P. Henson, Empire
– To see a girl who punches someone, have sex with boys, go on a cat fight-hair pulling-wrestling match with a girl, Cookie is the epitome of firework on the series. And Taraji was just there. You can’t really discount how she kept the character exciting, bombast, colorful but still exudes emotions, vulnerability and personality. Cookie from the breakout series, Empire, provided an exciting and thrilling character that made the viewers be more excited of what she would do next. She is a walking-talking timebomb that everybody will always want to explode and Taraji P. Henson was able to explore and portray that character spot on.

1. Hugh Dancy, Hannibal
– At this point, I still can’t beliew how “Hannibal” and its actors weren’t even getting nods on EMMYs. It is criminally frustrating. One of the best performers on the show is Hugh Dancy. He is spectacular as lead and not to mention he is so good looking. More so, his nuanced performance as Will Graham is an absolute magnetic. And if I had a choice, he deserves a nod. If not him, an equally great performer on the show, Mads Mikkelsen who was also incredible as Hannible Lecter.

2. Jon Hamm, Mad Men
– If he won’t win this year’s EMMY for the last and final season of Mad Men, it is a clear travesty. Jon Hamm was not just incredible, he was an absolute amazing actor of the show. He was nuanced. His performance is layered. The little details of his performance, from eye movements to body gestures, it was mind blowing.

3. Freddie Highmore, Bates Motel
– Vera Farmiga may be the anchor of the series, but for me, Freddie Highmore was the captain of the ship. And he did his portrayal of Norman EMMY worthy. Season 1 showed us that the kid can act, season 2 showed us he can deliver but in season 3? He was nothing but spectacular. Oh boy, Freddie Highmore was crazy, intense, fantastic, compelling and all those other wonderful adjectives thag you can think of. He just mastered the character like it was his own persona and made us wonder what more he can do as the series will progress in the future.

4. Grant Gustin, The Flash
– It’s time for The CW to get its second recognition for a show. And If Jane the Virgin was getting rightful credits in the comdey department, why not recognized a wonderful work CW has made with The Flash (and arguably, 100 should also get so much EMMY Buzz). To me aside from a wonderful narrative and story telling on the show, it actually boasts one of the most compelling lead in the face of Grant Gustin. The ex-glee Warbler showcased emotions from pleasuring wi to action packed thrill to emotional bag that you would realize, “Man! Barry Allen cried so much on the show.” but this is not just for the sake of dramatic purposes, he cries with depth, emotional pull and vulnerability.

5. Josh Hartnett, Penny Dreadful
– Eva Green may have stole the spotlight on the show but I thought Josh Hartnetr held his own providing a lovely support to Eva but still maintaining the essence that he is one of the leads on the series. His delivery was properly nuanced with the ability to let it all on the line and take vulnerability in a different world.

Not in particular order, here are my dream 5 nominees for SUPPORTING ACTRESS in a DRAMA SERIES

1. Caitlin Fritzgerald, Masters Of Sex
– The broken wife. Scorned. Hurt. On the verge of revenge and Caitlin Fritzgerald somehow managed to balance the character in the middle. You feel for her but you wanted to slap her as well. It was a layered character but more important, it was a layered performance of Caitlin Fritzgerald that made Libby Masters in the second season of the series a worthy of an Emmys nod.

2. Carrie Coon, The Leftovers
– Oh, Nora! From every moment she is in a scene, you just have to feel her. No! You will feel her. And it is not as if she was overshadowing everyone else, she’s not. Carrie was able to master that ability to stand out without even trying. To delve on a scene with intense but superbly controlled emotions, Carrie as Nora is an excellent bet.

3. Mae Whitman, Parenthood
– I’ve always adore Mae Whitman in this series. Actually, she has been stellar as Amber ever since the show started but for the final season of the series, we saw a tremendous growth, and emotional bag and the ability to stay grounded in a scene that requires her to float. She was sublime and layered. She was even more fantastic for the last season of the series.

4. Lorraine Toussaint, Orange Is The New Black
– Vee is not someone you will like in a series but Lorraine somehow made her interesting. And as the series’s recent season progress? For me, Vee was one of the more interesting, solid and compelling performances and there are about an absolute number of actresses in the series that could steal a slot from Lorraine and maybe some others especially when the Academy decided to put OITNB in the drama category. Namecheck: Uzo Aduba, Laverne Cox, Taryn Manning, Kate Mulgrew.

5. Lena Headey, Game Of Thrones
– Have you seen her walk of shame? That was golden! Lena Headey was able to embody that character with so much pain, regret, angst, emotional bag that made that quiet, yet powerful scene one of the best moments the series ever had. But more than that, Lena delivered probably a performance on the show that screams greatness. And if I would have to think of it, it is either her or Emilia Clarke who will probably get a well deserved shot for this category.

Not in particular order, here are my dream 5 nominees for SUPPORTING ACTOR in a DRAMA SERIES

1. Matthew Goode, The Good Wife
– Just like last year when I was rooting for Nicholas D’Agosto (Masters of Sex) for this category even with just a nod, I would do the same for Matthew Goode. Both were underrated. Both deserved a nod. Both performed exemplary beyond what was expected from them. Matthew’s inclusion as a cast regular in the season 6 of the show is a welcoming surprise especially with the departure of one of its amazing cast, Josh Charles. Tall order. But somehow, Matthew as Finn was able to deliver a nuanced performance. He is charming – maybe a big thanks to his good looks and accent – and is backed up by a slick, not over the top yet touching performance.

2. Peter Dinklage, Game Of Thrones
– Peter Dinklage continues to blew me away as Tyrion Lannister. As an example, that speech video above though it didn’t meet the eligibility for EMMYs 2015 nominations, was a good testament of how fantastic he is. And furthermore, as the season progress and the episodes developed, a more fantastic performance from Peter is what you can count on.

3. Jonathan Banks, Better Call Saul
– The “Five-o” episode alone of the series? That is true golden! Jonathan Banks character from the beginning of the season didn’t have so much going on but you can see how Jonathan was able to make the most out of it, giving us some of the most heart wrenching, a kick to the gut and full of emotions delivery that pull our heartstrings. He was amazing!

4. Robin Lord Taylor, Gotham
– We all know Ben Mckenzie anchored this freshman drama series of Fox and he was a fantatsic lead but somehow, Robin Lord Taylor was the one who really blew me away. This prequel storytelling of Batman didn’t meet all of the critiques love but for most of them, it was actually a good one. One of my favorite character is Oswald Copplebot or eventually we will know as “Penguin”. And for me, Robin was the perfec fit for the role. He was compelling and created texture & dynamics  for the series.

5. Jack Falahee, How To Get Away With Murder
– Crazy, slick, sexy. Sometimes I wonder why I am so attracted with Connor Walsh and he portrays a gay law student on the show. He is messed up but has a heart. He is insane but charming. He is all over the place but smart enough. Jack Falahee delivered a character that you root for in the series but managed to keep the mystery in his profile that pushed the series into always questioning, “Was it him, who got away with murder?”

Not in particular order, here are my dream 5 nominees for OUTSTANDING COMEDY SERIES

1. Looking (HBO)
– It was almost a saccharine contemporary gay themed series. The underrated HBO series is relatable – regardless of sexual preference – and crafted in a San Francisco vibe setting. The series allows us to dig deeper the life of gay people away from make-ups and costumes. Here, the series lay down narratives of people that were treated as people per se. Genuine, honest and straight, pun intended.

2. The Comeback (HBO)
– The long overdue second season of this Lisa Kudrow starrer is worth the wait. She was in incredible with a supporting cast that were able to live up to Lisa’s stellar showing as Valerie Cherish. The series isn’t just made for good laughs, it was a smart, witty and hilarious.

3. You’re The Worst (FX)
– The first season caught me off guard and at the end of every episode, I was hooked. The chemistry between the leads were impeccable and they provided a right mix of cheesiness and hilarity! The writing was lovely and funny. Chris Geere is superb!

4. Parks & Recreation (NBC)
– For their last season, I think it is just right for them to be acknowledge especially with a body work that was EMMY worthy! Sure, I wasn’t able to put Amy Phoeler on my dream nominees for lead actress, but she was together with the whole cast brought life, laughter and emotions on this NBC comedy. It was an all in all, compelling series that I will never get tired watching.

5. Fresh Off The Boat (ABC)
– ABC’s freshmen comedy series is probably one of the golden new comedy series. It was spot on hilarious! It looked and felt current. It has the fresh vibe but at the same time you feel like this formula of comedy has worked before. It was just, undeniably a fantastic comedy series and I can’t wait for the second season to come.

1. Amy Schumer, Inside Amy Schumer
– Amy was an underrated actress, at least for me. And her body of work on this series validate the fact that she is not just funny but has the comedic timing, charming appeal and stellar chops to pull such character with enough ease and confidence.

2. Lisa Kudrow, The Comeback
– Lisa Kudrow once again blew me away when the long overdue second season of The Comeback made its return on television. She was a fantastic actress with nuanced delivery and funny antics. From her iconic role Phoebe (Friends), Lisa was able to identify Valerie Cherish in this series as yet another stand-out character full of colors and layered profile.

3. Constance Wu, Fresh Off The Boat
– At first, people would say that the freshman series Fresh off the boat might suffer the same fate of Selfie or Marry Me or even A to Z, but to the surprise of them people, it survived a successful season thanks to its fresh, current and funny narrative and at the same a cast that was stellar, in particular Constance Wu! She was just there, her wit and comedic delivery are on point. She was just fantastic!

4. Ilana Glazer & Abbi Jacobson, Broad City
– Can they, if ever get nominated, go and do a tie for this category? They are without a doubt funny, perfect and exudes a chemistry that is charming, hilarious and nuanced.

5. Ellie Kemper, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
– In a series that felt like a 70s sitcom, Ellie Kemper came out shining with flying colors. Her performance is just funny. She was hilarious. She was a layered character delivered with a layered performance by Ellie!

EMMYS 2015: Best Lead Actor in a Comedy Series (Dream Nominees)

The nominations have been made and on July 16, 2015, the nominees will be announced. It has been an annual event in American television where the best of the best of primetime television were recognized by the Academy of Television, Arts & Sciences.

Of course, the possible nominees were rallied by shows that were part & showed in an eligible year from June 1, 2014 to May 31, 2015.

As a fun little thing on my blog, I would rack up some of my dream nominees on different major categories from Drama and Comedy. I must say, I had the greatest opportunity to catch a lot of series of both comedy and drama. So yeah.

Not in particular order, here are my dream 5 nominees for LEAD ACTOR in a COMEDY SERIES

1. Jeffrey Tambor, Transparent
– In this category, most probably Jeffrey has the trophy in his hand easily. And I’m okay with that because Jeffrey was fantastic in Transparent and even if sometimes I feel like this show and his performance could pass on the drama category, he was able to mix comedy and drama in a way that appeals to the audience. We feel him. We embrace his character.

2. Andy Samberg, Brooklyn Nine-Nine
– Andy is a good looking guy that could easily charm you. But more than that, his performance was simply lovely with the right humor, perfect delivery and hilarious crazy antics, Andy Samberg was able to captain the show and he shared the spotlight with his stellar supports. It made the show worked and compelling and funny.

3. Chris Messina, The Mindy Project
– Chris delivered every bit of his lines with so much sharpness and I must say, season 3 of the show is his best body of work to date. He was hilarious, crazy, funny and all sorts of emotional container that is waiting to burst out but still manages us to keep glued, laugh at him and feel exactly the enough emotions that was needed when the situation calls for it.

4. Chris Geere, You’re The Worst
– Jimmy Shive-Overly is self-centered, obnoxious and narcissistic but everything about him is adorable and charming that made him a character to root for. And the fact that his character is developing a deepening feelings to Gretchen made him even more adorable. It’s all sorts of not the perfect prince charming – in fact his narcissism would rub the audience off – but Chris Geere managed to play the part in a way you’ll most likely swoon over Jimmy and laugh in his hilariousness.

5. Jonathan Groff, Looking
– Patrick is a messed up modern day gay guy whose looking for a partner, love that could last. We hate him. We root for him. We wanted to find out whether his decisions are worth it. But despite his messed up personality, Patrick is something we could relate to regardless of sexual orientation. Jonathan Groff played the part well on this underrated but hilarious series. His performance is very nuanced. He isn’t that grand, over the top gay character, he portrayed it like any other human. It was relevant. It was vulnerable. It was a performance that almost speaks truth and reality.

Not in particular order, here are my dream 5 nominees for SUPPORTING ACTRESS in a COMEDY SERIES

1. Lauren Weedman, Looking
– With life and romantic dramas happening around Patrick, Dom and Augustin, Doris is the break out of that. But she also had some shared dramas on the show that made the series and her character even more dynamic. The truth is, Lauren was brilliant! Her nuances were terrific and her performance on the show was just raw, special and honest.

2. Anna Chlumsky, Veep
– Amy was a character on the show that you just can’t help but watch in glee, adore every single moments of craziness and adore her in so many ways. Anna Chlumsky was able to convey what the character asked her to be and more. That breakdown tirade in one of the episode that led hto her eventual resignation was something beautiful and Anna was able to combine a bombast delivery backed up with euphoric emotions in portarying such character.

3. Allison Janney, Mom
– In events of crazy situations, Allison would deliver a well thought, nuanced and hilarious scenes like it was just a spur of the moment. Her craziness is backed up with enough wit and humor. Allison Janney is an incredible support to Anna Farris that made “Mom” a series — tolerable and funny.

4. Jane Krakowski, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
– We could weigh in the performance of Jane on the show in between comedy and drama. But that’s what I like about her. There is an emotional response in every delivery she does and she does it with ease and confidence. I mean, she just knows how to twitch and play with the emotions of her character that every moment of hers on the show, won me over.

5. Amanda Peet, Togetherness
– I was torn between Tina and Michelle but I must say, I was more blown away by Amanda Peet’s performance as Michelle’s sister on the show. To be fair, they are both fantastic. But there is something breathtaking to Tina’s character profile that made me like her. She was just there but not an overpowering character. She was nuanced, deliberate and solid.
